Though BioShock takes place in 1960, it uses the 1966 version of "Doggie in the Window" instead of the original 1952 version, both recorded by Patti Page.

For comparison, both vocals were spliced and synced to match with each other with 1952 Mercury Records version hard-panned to the left and the 1966 Columbia Records version panned to the right in stereo. Adjust your speakers or headphones as needed.

The Columbia Records album is known as "Patti Page's Greatest Hits" CS 9326. There are a number of similar named albums made by Mercury which feature the original 1952 version and her other hit singles, but the Columbia Records album is the one that features the version used in BioShock.

Aside from edits accounting for the different timings of the instrumental interludes and some altered phrasing of words, Patti Page is remarkably in-sync with herself even after more than 10 years over two different record labels. Perhaps the years of overdubbing herself at Mercury paid off.

There are certain portions here where Patti Page can be heard singing in harmony with three versions of herself.

This situation with music licensing was obliquely mentioned by Ken Levine in the November 2007 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly: "[Dealing with this era of] licensed music... is a very complicated process, because generally you're dealing with people who are dead and their lawyers are dead. The rights are often very complicated, and so a lot of times we'd want a song and we wouldn't get it. We'd have to find another person who performed it, or another version of the recording or something like that. We had to be fairly flexible."
