Multi award winning film maker and Arrernte and Kalkadoon woman, Rachel Perkins, delivers the 2023 A N Smith Lecture in Journalism about the vital importance of truth telling in revealing the confronting true-stories of Australia’s colonial past and in adopting The Voice in Australia’s parliament, so that we can walk together towards a new future.

Rachel Perkins is an Arrernte and Kalkadoon woman and a multi-award-winning filmmaker. She directed the first series of Total Control and Mystery Road and her movies include Jasper Jones, Mabo, and the musical hit Bran Nue Dae. Her TV work includes Redfern Now, the landmark documentary series First Australians and most recently, The Australian Wars. In 1992 she founded Blackfella Films, one of Australia’s leading creators of Indigenous screen content.
