This is the second video regarding the best health insurance plans in San Diego County.
In the previous video, we covered Networks, Doctors, and Hospitals.
In this video we’ll go over the Cost and Customer Service criteria we used to select the best health plans.

The Second Criteria is the price of the health plan.

As a result of the ACA, there are 4 basic plan types:

Platinum, which is the highest benefit level and the highest cost, then Gold. Gold has a slightly less benefit benefits and costs less than Platinum. Then we have Silver and finally Bronze plans, which are the lowest cost and the least amount of benefits.

There are some anomalies in the plans and pricing,
although Silver offers greater benefits than Bronze plans, there are some Silver HMO plans that are lower cost than Bronze PPO plans.

You’ll see this a little clearer in the just a second.

Here is a table comparing the various health insurance plans and the pricing for someone age 30 and 55.

As you can see, the following insurance companies have the lowest cost in each “metal” tier:

Bronze - this level is dominated by Molina (lowest cost for most ages), and Kaiser
Silver - Health Net and Sharp have the lowest cost plans
Gold – Molina and Health Net have the lowest cost plans
Platinum - Health Net and Molina have the lowest cost plans

3rd Criteria is Customer Service

I expect to get disagreement on this topic. Basically, everyone has heard a horror story about one insurance company or another, and that impacts your opinion.

If you simply look at online reviews, then you would decide that Kaiser is the best health insurance company, but that’s only part of the story. With health insurance Everybody expects to get good service and only when something goes wrong do angry folks leave reviews . Kaiser on the other hand, encourages members to leave reviews about their good experiences, and the other insurance companies don’t.

My experience, as a broker and as a consumer is that the typical level of service is similar from one insurance company to the next.
There are variations form one year to the next.

My rankings for the customer service of each insurance company would be :
Blue Shield
Sharp Health Plan
Health Net
Kaiser Permanente
Molina Healthcare
