Biren Singh "a mad man, marauder and liar"; HM is protecting him for dishonourable reasons; PM, a hypocrite, who's "failed his job": BJP Manipur MLA, Paolienlal Haokip, to Karan Thapar for The Wire.

..........................................

In an astonishingly outspoken and even defiant interview, one of the BJP’s prominent Kuki MLAs from Manipur, Paolienlal Haokip, has called Chief Minister Biren Singh “a mad man, marauder and liar”, “a narcissist”, adding he’s “long lost his faith in the CM’s sincerity as an administrator” and claiming “his impartiality is doubtful”.

Mr. Haokip said that neither he nor the other six BJP Kuki MLAs would vote in support of the Biren Singh government if a vote of confidence is required. He also said that Tushar Mehta, the Solicitor General, had “lied” to the Supreme Court when he claimed that Biren Singh has been talking to Kuki MLAs about resolving the situation.

In a 34-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Mr. Haokip also questioned why Home Minister Amit Shah is protecting Chief Minister Biren Singh and went on to suggest that it was for reasons that cannot be discussed in public on television. Asked if he was suggesting that the Home Minister was protecting Biren Singh for “less than honourable reasons” Mr. Haokip said “I fully agree”.

In the interview, Mr. Haokip said the Prime Minister is a hypocrite who has not lived up to his tweet of 2017 when the Prime Minister said: “Those who cannot ensure peace in the state have no right to govern Manipur.” Mr. Haokip said the Prime Minister “has failed his job” adding and “obviously Manipur too”.

Mr. Haokip said the only solution to the 18-month old crisis in Manipur, which has again flared up, is a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo people which, he said, means a union territory with its own legislature.

Finally, Mr. Haokip was asked, given his views and outspoken criticism of the Chief Minister, Home Minister and the Prime Minister, why he has not left the BJP. He said he still hopes that saner voices in the BJP will prevail.

I have only given you some of the main points from this extremely forceful and outspoken interview. There’s a lot more, including Mr. Haokip’s concern that commitment to Hindutva was preventing the BJP and the Home Minister from protecting Christian Kukis, that I will leave you to see for yourself.
