API marketplaces are a hot topic, but there are different patterns how to set one up. Are you just offering your organization's APIs, are you covering a specific domain or region, or is it a truly global marketplace?

Sven Siat, Product Lead of the Open Banking Platform bLink at SIX Group, discusses the various ways in which API marketplaces can be conceived, and the two major things that marketplaces need to do:

👉 They have to reduce the cost of API search and discovery.
👉 They have to reduce the transaction cost for API producers and consumers.

The specific marketplace we are discussing is SIX Group's Open Banking Platform bLink. bLink provides a marketplace for standardized APIs to financial institutions. It establishes a marketplace for a specific domain and region, in this case financial institutions in the Swiss market.

How quickly will this pattern of specialized marketplaces catch on? In the general marketplace space, we're now seeing three major patterns of API marketplaces:

👉 API marketplaces provided by one organization.
👉 API marketplaces provided for specific domains and/or regions.
👉 Global API marketplaces.

It will be interesting to see the growth of these segments and how solution providers are adapting to these. There are different needs in terms of the features these different types of marketplaces must provide. Different providers will have to be clear about which of these patterns they provide, and which specific features make them a good fit for specific scenarios.
