1983 Renault RE40 F1 in action: Accelerations & 1.5 Twin-Turbo V6 Sound!

This video is about a Renault RE40 (chassis RE40-04) I recorded during the 2017 and 2018 editions of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It was Renault's F1 car for the 1983 season, driven by Alain Prost and Eddie Cheever, and it was able to achieve 4 wins, 3 pole positions and many podium finishes but which weren't enough to win the Constructors' Championship.

Since ground effect had been banned at the end of 1982, the car features a flat bottom and bigger wings in order to recover some downforce lost. The chassis was built entirely in carbon fibre (first Renault chassis to be built with that material) except for the small, aluminium nose section, known as the "crash box", in order to facilitate repair in the case of a minor accident. Since in those years there were still concerns regarding carbon fibre's strength, the chassis was overbuilt to ensure greater resistance. Under the hood, a Renault Gordini EF1 1.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine was able to produce around 880hp in qualifying trim. Unfortunately turbochargers themselves were to prove the RE40's weakness in that year.

RE40 was also the first Formula 1 car to blow the diffuser (not with the exhaust layout shown in this video, of course). This aero development was tested on Alain Prost's car during the 5th round of the season (Monaco GP) as a further possibility to recover some downforce. The French driver disliked this solution which didn't guarantee a balance in terms of performance when facing corners, especially fast ones. Anyway Renault continued to develop the blown diffuser exhaust system throughout 1983, improving its performance so that it was a fixed feature of the 1984 RE50.
