Kalpana Patowary, a distinguished Indian playback singer and folk artist, is renowned for her dedication to preserving the socio-reforming folk art of Bhikhari Thakur, a cultural legacy rooted in Bihar. Her international collaboration album Voyage 2, which merges Indian traditional music with global musical traditions, was submitted for consideration at the 67th Grammy Awards in the Global Music Performance category. Kalpana's commitment to reviving endangered languages is evident in her work with rural tribal dialects of Northeast India, including Deori, Bodo, and Brajavali, through which she challenges cultural preconceptions and highlights India's rich linguistic diversity using an innovative musical approach. Over the years, she has written and performed more than 16,000 songs in 30 endangered Indian vernaculars, underscoring her dedication to preserving linguistic heritage.

Kalpana Patowary's global impact is further highlighted by her performance of Indian traditional music in five languages during the 2018 Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony in Queensland, Australia. Her melodic audiovisual renditions serve as an enduring effort to preserve India's rich intangible cultural heritage. As the foremost practitioner of Bhikhari Thakur's Lokgayan tradition, Kalpana has made significant strides in reviving the legacy of this Bhojpuri social crusader and playwright. Her performance at the 2017 Sangeet Natak Akademi in Chhapra, Bihar, solidified her position as a cultural custodian, and her efforts have brought this unique singing style to the forefront of Indian folk music.

Kalpana Patowary holds the distinction of being the first woman to record and produce Bihar’s Chhaprahiya Purvi folk music, a tradition previously dominated by male artists. In an era of globalization, her determined efforts to revive, research, archive, and reintroduce this nearly extinct oral folk tradition have garnered national recognition. Her work has played a pivotal role in bringing the intangible folk music of Bhojpur to the cultural forefront of India, while also connecting modern India to the Girmitiya Diaspora in countries such as Fiji, Mauritius, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad, and Tobago.

One of Kalpana’s notable achievements includes presenting Gangasnan, a musical rendition of Bhikhari Thakur’s ode to the Ganges, at a banquet between Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Varanasi in 2015. She also paid musical homage to Mahatma Gandhi’s arrival at Motihari during the 100th anniversary of the Champaran Satyagraha, recounting the farmers' resistance to British colonial indigo farming. Her multimedia lecture on the Champaran Satyagraha, accompanied by the 2018 Chhath audiovisual release, resonated deeply, depicting India’s spiritual peace and illustrating how Muslim households in Bihar honor this ancient Hindu sun worship ritual.

Kalpana’s contributions extend beyond her performances. She has been instrumental in educating younger generations about the value of India’s rich folk music heritage. She plays a wide range of Northern Indian traditional music, including Purvi, Pachra, Nirgun, Kajri, Birha, Holi, Sohar, Nautanki, Vivaah Geet, and Ramleela Gaan. Additionally, she is skilled in Northeast Indian tribal folk music forms such as Bihu, Oinitom, Ghoxa, Borgeet, Kamrupi, Goalporiya Lokogeet, Biyanaam, Bodo Kherai Geet, and Kaban.

Kalpana’s efforts to preserve traditional folk instruments, such as the Dotora, Sarinda, Kartal, Kalia, Goalporiya Dhol, Bodo Kham, Sifung, and Deori Pepa, have been vital in protecting these cultural relics from extinction. Her thorough research and study of Indian folk music have elevated Bhojpuri and tribal Assamese music to new artistic heights, earning her widespread recognition. Notably, she became the first Bhojpuri Khadi Birha ambassador on the international platform of MTV Coke Studio in 2015, a landmark achievement in her career.

Kalpana’s musical journey began in Assam, where she was mentored by her father, Bipin Patowary, a renowned folk singer. She drew inspiration from the legendary Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, also known as the Brahmaputra Bharat Ratna. A newspaper in Suriname once referred to her as the "Bhojpuri Wonderkind," and she was prominently featured on its front page in 2014. In a testament to her international influence, Stanford University in California sent a group of 25 students to Mumbai to review her Bhojpuri-language book on Bhikhari Thakur’s legacy.

Kalpana Patowary’s contributions extend far beyond her musical accomplishments. She serves as a role model and cultural ambassador, embodying India's diverse cultural heritage with pride and promoting cultural tolerance and unity through her work.
