মহাত্মা গান্ধীর হ'ত্যাকাণ্ড ১৯৪৮ সালের ৩০ জানুয়ারি কেবল এক ব্যক্তিগত হত্যাকাণ্ড ছিল না, এটি ভারতের দুই ভিন্ন আদর্শ—গান্ধীর মানবিক, বহুত্ববাদী ভারত বনাম গডসের হিংস্র হিন্দুত্ববাদী ভারতের- মধ্যের দ্বন্দ্বের প্রকাশ। দেশভাগের সময় গান্ধী নিরপেক্ষ থেকে মানবতার পক্ষে দাঁড়িয়েছিলেন, সব ধর্মের মানুষকে সমান অধিকার নিশ্চিত করতে চেয়েছিলেন। নাথুরাম গডসের পিস্তল থেকে বের হওয়া তিনটি গুলি ছিল অহিংসা, সত্য এবং ধর্মনিরপেক্ষতার উপর আক্রমণ। গডসের আদর্শের মূল ছিল বিভেদ ও হিংসা, যা গান্ধীর অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক দর্শনের বিপরীত। গান্ধী হত্যা করে গডসে নিজেকে ‘দেশপ্রেমিক’ হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠা করতে চেয়েছিল, কিন্তু ইতিহাস প্রমাণ করেছে যে সত্য, অহিংসা ও ন্যায়ের মূল্য এখনও জীবন্ত। আজকের ভারতও এই আদর্শিক লড়াইয়ের মুখোমুখি, যেখানে আমাদের বেছে নিতে হবে—গান্ধীর পথ অনুসরণ করে মানবিক ও বহুত্ববাদী দেশ গড়া, নাকি হিংস্র বিভেদের পথে চলা।
