Self-tape auditions can feel frustrating, especially when you're trying to get everything just right for casting directors. You’ve spent hours perfecting your performance, but still, it feels like you’re not getting noticed. So, what’s really going wrong?

Here’s the thing: casting directors are looking for specific things in your self-tape auditions, and if your tape doesn’t meet those expectations, it’s easy to get overlooked.

So, what exactly do casting directors look for?

🎥 Clear, Strong Framing
Are you visible and easy to watch? The camera should capture you in the best light, with proper headroom and a balanced shot. If your head’s cut off or you’re not centered, it distracts from your performance. Don’t be afraid to experiment with angles until you get it just right.

🎧 High-Quality Audio & Video
It sounds simple, but many actors forget this key element. Poor sound or grainy video can make it hard for casting directors to even hear or see your performance properly. Make sure your video is clear, your sound is crisp, and there’s no background noise distracting from your delivery.

👋 Slate That Sells You
The slate is your first impression, and it matters. A lot. Don’t just rattle off your name and resume. Be personable, show a little personality, and give them a glimpse of who you are outside of the lines. Your slate should be short, but impactful.

⚡ Focus on Your Energy
Zoom rooms and self-tapes can feel like you're talking to a wall but trust me, casting directors can tell if your energy drops. On camera, you have to amp up your energy to make sure it translates well. Casting needs to feel like you’re right there with them not like you’re reading off a page.

📜 Hit Your Marks with the Script
This one’s huge: Know the sides, but don’t over-rehearse. Keep it fresh and grounded. Be connected to the material, but also feel free to take a risk. If you’re playing it safe or just running through the lines, it’s going to show. You need to breathe life into your performance make us feel something.
