ABSTRACT
The "Once Upon a Time" collection of glass vases is composed of four pieces in different sizes, created from the recording of Guto Requena's grandmother retelling the fables from his childhood. These stories were captured on a mobile phone in 2011 and used as the basis for the computer models of the vases. The forms generated by the interpretation of the audio files are the soul of these works, which express through their curves the narrative drama of the fables. The vases were manufactured by glass blowing artisans using recycled material.
The collection reflects the interests of the Estudio Guto Requena in the design process, in designs inspired by emotional memory, in the rich Brazilian culture and history, and an appreciation for the artisanal. The objects represent a form of investigation of the creative process in design using the possibilities offered by new digital technologies and concepts arising from Cyberculture.
INSPIRATION
Dona Therezinha, Guto Requena's maternal grandmother, was an English teacher in the city of Sorocaba, São Paulo. Often in his childhood there, Requena and his cousins would gather around to listen in rapt attention to her telling stories, many of which came from English literature. "The different intonations she created with her voice were mesmerizing, the suspense and joy, the rich details of her narrative. These shared memories have remained with me all my life. "
At 85 years old, Dona Therezinha possesses an inspiring clarity. In 2011 Requena decided to record some of her most memorable stories. On every trip to see her, he repeated the ritual of his childhood. These were beautiful voyages back in time to the sight of his grandmother's home, its sounds and smells, and to many new discoveries that emerged.
CREATION
Four tales were chosen to transform into objects: "The Wind and the Sun", "The Wren and the Owl ", "The Party in Heaven" and "The Little Dove and the Ant ". With these stories captured on MP3 files, Estudio Guto Requena began processing them via software into two-dimensional curves. Each curve visually portrays the narrative drama of the tales, and are the literal embodiments of the sighs, emotions and sound qualities of Requena's grandmother.
The next step was to transform this curve into a three-dimensional form. With a simple maneuver using Rhino 3D software, this curve was rotated 360 degrees about an axis, generating the final shape of the vessel. Therefore, the final forms were obtained through parametric modeling, using the images generated from the audio files as parameters. Each fable has a unique curve, shape and size. Each vase is the volumetric materialization of one fable.
FABRICATION
While the creative process involved digital technologies, analog and artisanal techniques were chosen for the fabrication process.
The glass factories in the São Paulo neighborhood of Belenzinho, which saw its peak production in the 1950s and 1960s, were founded by Italian immigrants from the Murano region in the 1930s. After the end of the military dictatorship in 1984, the 1990s brought economic liberalization, especially during the Collor administration. Most artisanal glass factories in the Belenzinho area failed in this period, losing their business to the giant international firms that had arrived.
To produce the "Once Upon a Time" collection, Requena relied on one of the few companies that survived this period, a family business currently in its fourth generation of glass workers. The four vases were hand-made through the ancient technique of glassblowing. They were composed of glass shards and scraps of sheet glass from the Guardian glass factory. The four iron forms used to shape the vases during the blowing process were also handcrafted.
