Richard III is a history play by William Shakespeare written in 1591. It depicts the Machiavellian rise to power and subsequently short reign of Richard III, formerly the Duke of Gloucester. The play is grouped with the histories in the First Folio and is most often classified as such. However, in the quarto edition, it is termed a tragedy, despite the fact that it lacks certain requisite elements of a true tragic story. Richard is clearly the villain of the story, therefore, he cannot also be the "tragic hero." When compared with Othello, for example, Iago is clearly the villain, and Othello is the tragic hero. Use Oedipus Rex (another role I have played) as the template for a perfect tragedy: The hero does everything he feels is right, yet still suffers horribly in the end.
