Action By July Drama

July Drama constantly tasks himself to communicate emotion via the vibration of sound and genuinely believes he has done so with his latest release “Action” he highlights the detailed use of vibration patterns on the instrumental and the use of a 60s poetry pattern to communicate his message on a romantic song of which the object is his insecurity concerns.

Coming a long way from Tryst 2019, July constantly experiments with his sound mostly with incremental innovations to the beat style. July says that his number one rule is to remain loyal to the masks, usually associated with the drama symbol one which represents comedy and the other is tragedy, so each story must have vibrations that make you feel like a child to represent comedy but also an underlying melancholic undertone.

The song begins with a calming bop with a relaxing aura to represent a safe space. The energy of the writing can be likened to 21 questions by 50 cent. July poses important questions to anyone we have a relationship with “shey you go love me if I get matter, if I de boys quarter, near gutter, no water, shey you go de fetch water abi you go find alternative”

It is followed by a melancholy of reflection, one of the things July added to his sound circa November 21' was a wind instrument, he adapts this from Asian culture and how they use the gifts of the earth to touch their spirituality, July says the breathlessness at the end of the flute exhibits the use of life. The concept of a pause right after the questions posed by July is adapted from “The power of now” by Eckhart Tolle where we are prompted by a symbol to stop reading and reflect on what we have just read. As the melancholy comes to an end the energy begins to change, it is disrupted by a massive drop with July repeating “action” a prompt to stop us right before we transition into overthinking and symbolising how he wants to see action and not just words or ideas.

The corresponding film for this music piece is a music video shot in canary wharf London England in the winter of 21', the video stars Aimee “Asia Rose” Amstrong who recently featured in works with Stefflondon, Stonebwoy, Celina Sharma and Ivorian doll. Aimee plays the partner of July Drama who he has had past experiences with, an era when July was down, an era when everything was perfect and now in the present day however he still shows his insecurities asking the questions.

July urges us to pay attention to every detail of the video, from the locations to the props, to the colours, and to him and her. Every point you may ask yourself "why did he do this, or why did he go this route" was deliberate and carries a message.

In the video July is seen carrying luggage which represents his baggage which he must carry himself. When everything is good, it will be easy advice to give to "let go of all baggage", but when the plot twists it is from that same baggage that the instruments to save July/yourself will be found i.e. the pure white cloth that signifies peace. July says “The luggage is baggage, the colours have meaning and each flash in the video is a time portal, good luck”

The video was shot by little compound ltd, Damilola Komolafe, Written and Directed by July Drama himself, Adeoluwa Adeyemi was the DOP and assistant Director. Buhari Yesufu of comebackhomewemissyou was the the assistant producer with help from Cecelia Aina. As is the usual case July works with Rosewood Nigeria on the post production, the same company responsible for July Drama Call Back 2017.
