Artificial Intelligence is transforming societies at extraordinary speed. Its benefits are rising quickly, yet many countries still lack the infrastructure, skills, and governance systems needed to absorb them. At the same time, many of these countries are already experiencing economic and social disruptions triggered by AI. This combination of slower adoption and higher vulnerability may create what the report calls the Next Great Divergence, a widening of inequality between countries driven by uneven readiness and uneven resilience to AI’s disruptions.

UNDP’s flagship report, The Next Great Divergence, shows how this dynamic is unfolding most visibly in Asia and the Pacific. The region’s diversity in income levels, digital foundations, and governance capacity reveals how AI’s impacts on people, economies, and public institutions may deepen gaps between countries. The report offers practical pathways for countries to benefit from AI while managing its risks in ways that support shared human development.
