Many exotic animals that are threatened in the distant wilderness find a refuge in zoos in Europe. But zoos cannot replace nature. To ensure that zoo inhabitants feel at home, modern zoos in Germany have to break new ground. After all, if the animals grow up healthy and fit, they can also have fun, experience adventures and have offspring. Zoos therefore come up with many things to keep the senses of their charges sharp. Keepers hide food and build devices that make it more difficult to find treats. Many zoo animals are also given surprising toys so that they don't get bored while in human care. Giraffes perform tongue acrobatics on a bucket mobile. Gorillas use sticks as tools to grab food. And even a boxfish wants to be kept busy in the aquarium.
