Voice-Over Core JKD, as Spoken by Eric. E. Cane
There's a thing about sparring and the human condition.
In the struggle against another human being who’s thinking, moving, evading, striking, adapting, you come to realize you are alone in this. That sovereign individual facing you—whom you do not control—seeks your weaknesses. Seeks to exploit anything that does not serve you for your survival.
In the rush of adrenaline, you can be hit, emotionally, all the way back to your childhood. You will deal with that. Any unresolved issues on that trip to your youth will get in the way here.
The other person has their own childhood and experiences and emotional connections they have to deal with. Experience helps you relegate them to where they belong — in the past. Everything that brought you to the point where you are standing in front of another living, breathing, thinking, human being who has every right to be on the planet in front of you is stripped to its bare essentials.
Breathing, getting it under control, can be more threatening than the person before you. Used improperly, it can seize up your muscles, and it can seize up your mind. If your body runs away with itself, it'll take your mind with it. Hyperventilating is the gateway to panic. You become a nonthinking animal—as content to run itself into oncoming traffic as it is to flail wildly at the person, the other sovereign being, in front of you.
If you regulate your breathing, you regain your humanity. You regain the structure of experience and training and you allow it to stand with you, to support you in the battle.
The human condition. The continual drive to wake up in the morning and engage life. To do the work of living. To go through the effort of breathing and carrying your experiences and memories and potential with you into the world, knowing you are worthy. Knowing that no matter what comes your way, no matter who stands in front of you, they did the very same thing to stand in front of you this day. This moment in time. In this place.
While it's true you bring into this all of your loneliness, all of your effort, all of your memories, all of your loves and hates, joys and despair—you do this in the presence of someone doing that very same thing.
The goal isn't to dominate the other person. The goal is to stand. To recognize you are worthy to be present in your own life.
We are kindred in this struggle against ourselves, against the weight we carry in each step.
We walk the earth in our shared expression of pain and joy. We stand before each other connected in this human condition.
Connected by the very air we breathe between us.
Aware. Present. Engaged.
