United Way of Greater Waterbury is fortunate to be able to celebrate two recipients of the James C. Smith Spirit of Excellence Award this year. Many organizations participate in our annual campaign — raising vital funds — but we were particularly impressed by the creativity and energy that Post University poured into its workplace campaign this year, starting with its kickoff picnic on campus!

The campaign’s tiered giving schedule encouraged early donations with incentives and matches. And the strategy worked! There was a 31.68% increase in employee giving for a total of $114,153. Thirty employees gave at the leadership level (i.e.,$1,000 or more) and two are members of the Tocqueville Society. One of the most exciting pieces of news is that the corporate gift was $218,082, which represents an 80% increase compared to last year.

This kind of result doesn’t just happen. We credit Campaign Chair Stephanie Caban and are very glad for the succession plan she has structured so that Post University can continue to support our community at the same level with our new campaign chair, who was selected thanks to a committee that meets weekly to ensure the success of the university’s United Way campaign.

Noting that the university is a corporate sponsor, CEO John Hopkins commented on how the faculty and students are focused on the future. “We are a strong supporter of the UPSTARTERS® program and happy to jump into United Way activities that help kids learn — such as reading to students — or fulfilling their nutritional needs so they can think — such as volunteering at Stock the Pantry. I can’t tell you how proud I am of everyone at Post University for their participation as it translates to more than financial support. They truly embraced the spirit of the campaign and what it will mean to HELP EVERY VOICE BE HEARD.”

A workplace special event raised hundreds of additional dollars to help those in need. And members of the Emerging Leaders affinity group showed how the values of Post University translate into community relationships.

As if all of this wasn’t enough, Post University chose to invest in United Way’s new podcast facilities so that we can tell the stories of people who need help and how our community is responding to that need. Thank you to Post University for what you do to educate students and guide them as they become the people who make our community better.
