UTW 2024 How To Not Run Towards The Bear: Directionality & Emoji

DESCRIPTION:
The basic direction of reading order differs for users of Left-to-Right scripts and Right-to-Left scripts, and implementations of Unicode bidirectionality must take this into account. This even applies to what might seem like “textless” all-emoji sequences, down to the directionality of individual emoji.

We will demonstrate:
An overview of base-level directionality in text.
How directionality affects the reading of emoji sequences.
The development & interpretation of individual-emoji directionality introduced in Unicode 15.1.

BIO:
Kamilé Demir is a Computer Scientist on the Adobe Fonts & Type team. She represents Adobe in the Unicode Emoji Standards & Research Working Group and is Adobe’s secondary representative for the Unicode Technical Committee. Her favorite emoji is splatter, newly added in Unicode 16.0!
Ben Joeng (Yang) is part of the Adobe Fonts & Type Org. and has contributed to the development of the Unicode Standard for many years. Ben is a linguist and software engineer and participates regularly in the Unicode Script Encoding Working Group.
