This YouTube commentary is based on John MacArthur’s sermon “The Exclusive Claims of Christ” (Grace to You, gty.org), preached August 6, 2015. Short Commentary

What if some of the most famous preachers are wrong about the gospel – and souls are at stake? This message confronts the shocking claim that people can be saved without ever hearing of Jesus, simply by being sincere or religious. Drawing from decades of wrestling with this issue, the speaker explains why defending the true gospel has become a dividing line, even inside evangelical circles. The central question is direct and unavoidable: Do people have to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and believe it in order to be saved?

Scripture insists that salvation comes only through faith in Christ as He is revealed in the gospel. For centuries believers have crossed oceans, spent their lives, and even died to carry this one message because apart from it no one is rescued from judgment. Yet today natural theology, religious pluralism, and sentimental ideas about a “wideness” in God’s mercy suggest that sincere Hindus, Muslims, or even atheists may reach God without the cross. This teaching exposes how such views deny the plain biblical testimony and empty missions and evangelism of their urgency.

The Bible describes a humanity that cannot climb to God by reason, religion, or morality. General revelation in creation and conscience, as in Romans 1, leaves people without excuse but never brings them to saving knowledge. Human wisdom always twists truth into idolatry, so that false worship ultimately becomes worship of demons, as seen in 1 Corinthians 10. Only when the Spirit uses the “foolish” message of the cross, preached by unimpressive messengers, does God open blind eyes, grant repentance and faith, and ensure that all glory belongs to Him alone.

True spiritual warfare, as in 2 Corinthians 10, is not chasing demons but tearing down arguments, exposing false hopes, and bringing every thought captive to Christ through the truth of the gospel. Because people cannot be saved without hearing and believing this message, the church must recover humble, fearless preaching and worldwide missions grounded in passages like Matthew 28, Romans 10, and Acts 4.
