Official Baseball Rule 6.01(i)(2) states that "if the catcher without possession of the ball blocks the pathway of the runner, the umpire shall call or signal the runner safe."

HP Umpire Carlos Torres originally ruled Pirates baserunner R2 Greg Allen out at home plate on Chirinos' tag but after Pittsburgh challenged the call, Replay HQ overturned the call to safe, awarding a run due to Chirinos illegally blocking home plate by failing to provide Allen with a path to the plate pursuant to the plate blocking rule.

By rule, arguing a replay review outcome is grounds for ejection.
