STORYLINE:
Georgian snipers opened fire on a South Ossetian police post from the Kheiti village, the unrecognised South Ossetian government said on Friday.
A civilian and a policeman travelling in a car were injured in the incident, said Mikhail Mindzaev, Minister of Interior of Southern Ossetia.
"At approximately at 8 am Georgian snipers opened fire on our police post from the side of Kheiti village. These actions resulted in the wounding of a civilian and a policeman, they were travelling in a car at the time."
A residential area in the northern outskirts of the regional capital Tskhinvali was shelled from the Georgian territory, officials said.
Tensions are persisting in South Ossetia, which broke away from Georgian government control during a war in the early 1990s.
Georgian member of parliament Guram Vakhtangishvili said that the tension in the area is worse than ever.
"The situation is tense, extremely tense. The current situation is more tense than it has ever been over the seventeen year Georgian-Ossetian conflict," he told AP Television in the Georgian capital Tbilisi.
Georgia's government has vowed to bring South Ossetia, and the region of Abkhazia, back under control.
South Ossetia, which has a patchwork of ethnic Ossetian and ethnic Georgian villages, has, however, cultivated close ties with Russia, and Georgia accuses Moscow of siding with the separatists.
Earlier this year, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili ordered the creation of a parallel South Ossetian government loyal to Tbilisi, but the provisional administration has effective control only over the villages populated by an estimated 14,000 ethnic Georgians and making up roughly 40 percent of South Ossetia's territory.
