HARD TEACHING | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (August 25, 2024)

We are on the Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time. Today’s gospel presents the conclusion of Jesus’s discourse on the bread of life. On this occasion Jesus asks the Twelve: “Do you also want to leave?”

Some followers of Jesus already left. They found Jesus’s teachings unacceptable. “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” they said. They returned to their old ways, “and no longer accompanied him.” Jesus is aware of their unbelief, and so he asked those who remained if they also wanted to leave.

Friends, the same question is being presented to us, every day. Do we want to leave Jesus when his teachings are not of our liking? Do we cling to him like the Twelve, in spite of difficulties and failures, because we know he possesses the Word of Life? May we be always convinced that Jesus is God’s Holy One, and in choosing him we will never go wrong.
