Short answer: Portuguese for "turn of the sea" or "Return from the sea". It is a navigational technique developed by the Portuguese in the late 15th Century.

The Volat do Mar is the sailing pattern that lies at the very foundation of the age of sail and age of exploration.

It is at its very base a pattern, where you sail down along the coast of Africa from the Iberain paeninsula following the Canary Current.

The current makes it possible to go down along the coast, but difficult to return.

Thus what is done in the Volat do Mar is turning west into the open Atlantic to make use of the trade winds after you have crossed the Horse Latitudes.

Then while going West you cross the winds to gain a Northern direction until you cross the Horse latitudes again.

As you then reach the westerlies you can turn East and ride the winds back from the sea.
