What is dacryocystitis?

Is dacryocystitis an emergency?
If the acute dacryocystitis is very severe, the appearance can be like that of an orbital cellulitis. The orbit and eyelid are swollen and the patient feverish and unwell. This is then an emergency.

What is adult dacryocystitis?
Acute dacryocystitis in adults. Acute dacryocystitis in adults is a painful condition of the tear sac (lacrimal sac) when the tear duct is blocked. The tear sac fills with tears and mucus, which then becomes infected and forms a red lump at the corner of the eye on the side of the nose.

How can you prevent dacryocystitis?
Prevention. You can prevent future infections by having surgery called dacryocystorhinostomy to widen the blocked duct. If you or your child often gets tear duct infections, one way to prevent them is to drain the tear sac. Wash your hands, then hold a warm, wet washcloth over the tear sac.

Is Dacryoadenitis the same as dacryocystitis?
DACRYOADENITIS. Dacryoadenitis is inflammation of the lacrimal glands, whereas dacryocystitis is inflammation of the lacrimal sac in the inferior lid. Both conditions can be caused by viruses or bacteria.

Why is the upper inner corner of my eye swollen?
The most common cause of eyelid swelling is allergies, either by direct contact with the allergen (such as animal dander entering your eye) or from a systemic allergic reaction (such as a food allergy or hay fever). If one eyelid is swollen, a common cause is a chalazion, an obstructed gland along the rim of an eyelid.

What is the most common cause of acute dacryocystitis?
Dacryocystitis can be classified into acute or chronic and acquired or congenital. An acute infectious state typically causes acute dacryocystitis. In the United States, the most common organism is Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species, followed by Haemophilus influenza and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Can dacryocystitis cause blindness?
A few patients present with fever, prostration, and an elevated leukocyte count. More serious sequelae of acute dacryocystitis include extension into the orbit with formation of an abscess and development of orbital cellulitis. When this occurs, it may lead to blindness, cavernous sinus thrombosis, and death.

Why is dacryocystitis common in females?
Epidemiology. Fungal dacryocystitis accounts for 5% of all acquired dacryocystitis, and 14% of cases of congenital dacryocystitis. Women are affected more frequently with all forms of dacryocystitis than men, probably because of anatomically narrower nasolacrimal ducts.

Can allergies cause Dacryocystitis?
Nasal pathology that can predispose to dacryocystitis includes the following: hypertrophied inferior turbinate, deviated nasal septum, nasal polyp, and allergic rhinitis
