The Kunisaki Peninsula is a little-known, idyllic rural area on Kyushu, located in the north-east part of the Oita Prefecture. Right in the middle of the peninsula, there is Mount Futago - the centre of Kunisaki’s Rokugomanzan Buddhist-Shinto culture. Rokugomanzan means “six districts full of mountains” and has been used as a generic name for all the temples in the ‘six districts’ on Kunisaki Peninsula. 2018 marks the 1,300th anniversary of Rokugomanzan, and the celebrations will bring Kunisaki to the fore for the first time in centuries.
The hiking trails at the Kunisaki Peninsula range from all levels, which allows everyone to enjoy the peaceful and natural environment. The concept of the long trail is to educate those about the history of Shugendo as it pertains to the Kunisaki Peninsula and its Rokugomanzan culture. These courses span the mountains allowing for some wonderful discoveries of temples and statues that have been left untouched for hundreds of years. Explore together with Javier this mysterious area.
