In August, I spent a week’s holiday in Goderich, Ontario, on the shores of Lake Huron; during my time in this very pretty city, I went for a tour of the Historic Huron Gaol.

Three men were hanged at the gaol, 2 of them publicly: William Mahon, 26, hanged on December 18th 1861 for the murder of Catherine Garbutt & Sarah Harcourt, her granddaughter; Nicolas Melady, 23, hanged on December 3rd, 1869 for the murder of his father & stepmother & Edward Jardine, hanged on June 16th 1911 for the rape-murder of his sister-in-law Lizzie Anderson.

In the weeks ahead, I will share their stories, as well as recount the case of James Donnelly of the “Black Donnellys,” who was sentenced to hang in Goderich in 1859, but who had his sentence commuted
