“Emily Dickinson was born in 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. She lived throughout her life in her father's house. Near the end of her life, she rarely left her own room. Aside from a few mostly anonymous verses, she remained unpublished. When she died, her poems were discovered. Some of the strangest, most fascinating poems ever written. Almost 2,000 of them, hidden in a maid's trunk.”

This is my attempt at making a character study of Emily Dickinson. I started it a month ago and it was the hardest thing I've ever done, not only because it's almost 7-minute long (believe me, it could've been worse and I had to force myself to leave some parts out), but also because I realized that the reason I liked Dickinson so much is that I could, in a sense, relate to Emily.
As a french girl, I've never heard about Emily Dickinson before watching the show. Funny because in english litterature classes, we studied Poe, Orwell, Bradbury... But no woman in sight. I couldn't quote you any french poem made by a woman either. Poets like Hugo, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Apollinaire, Eluard, Breton, Baudelaire, Lamartine, La Fontaine, they've all been part of my education and, despite the complete lack of female poet example, I've always liked reading poetry, and writing poems (they were cringe, but still an attempt was made).
Reading and writing got soon replaced by vidding as I grew up. I don't pretend to have 0,00001% of the creativity & artistic talent of Emily Dickinson, but this edit and its themes speak to me, as an artist, and I hope it resonates with you too. Struggling with depression and feeling lost in my own world, it's the process of making these edits that is the only way I know to keep me grounded, express myself, and share something meaningful with people. And this is a hobby that is literally saving my life.
Like Austin said, Emily has something real, her poems, just like I have my silly little edits.
I just hope you enjoy this. This was also a personal challenge because I wanted to escape my bad habits of trying to follow every single beat of a song when I'm vidding, I hope the pacing isn't too distracting.
