A Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPA) is an agreement between two countries that aims to encourage investment by each country in the other's territory. BIPPAs include provisions for:
National treatment and most-favored-nation treatment: Each country must treat investments from the other country no less favorably than their own investments or those from any third country

The Government of India has signed BIPAs with 42 countries. The BIPPA between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) expired on September 12, 2024. To replace it, the two countries signed a new Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) on February 13, 2024, which came into effect on August 31, 2024. The BIT aims to create a more robust investment environment and enhance economic cooperation between the two countries.
