Every country in the world has national identity and traditional performing arts is part of the national identity of a country. Myanmar has its own unique literature, cuisine, clothing, sports and performing arts all of which make national identity of Myanmar people. There were two types of performing arts in Myanmar back in the day of Myanmar monarchs and early British colonial administration period. These two types of performing arts were ‘on-the-ground’ performance and ‘stage’ performance. Performance of marionette has been classified into the category of stage performance and it is also regarded as the most difficult performing arts. Most of the marionettes in Myanmar are wooden ones and they reflect Myanmar traditions. Myanmar marionette has various characters up to 28 characters in general. In the ancient time, background artists have to act female voices as well since women participation was prohibited in the marionette performance shows. Myanmar marionette performance has three branches namely marionette sculpture, marionette and variety show arts. 18 strings are attached in Myanmar male character marionettes while 19 strings are attached to Myanmar female character marionettes. Some marionette expert performance artists in Myanmar can perform up to four different marionettes at the same time.
