日本古来の美意識の特徴の一つが、ここにないものを感じることです。 失われたもの、距離、欠如、隠れた、または見えない何か、または不完全さなどです。
美を感じるには、想像力が大きな役割を果たします。
One of the striking characteristic features of Japanese traditional sensitivity is sensing something that is not around – loss, distance, lack, something hidden or out of sight, or incompleteness. In appreciating beauty, imagination plays a significant role.

茶室は、その時々の美的感情を満たすべく備えられるものを除いては、まったく空っぽでなければならない。
