• Spoken Roman Latin, from TV Show "Barbarians"
Latin is an ancient Indo-European language that originated in the region of Latium in central Italy around the 7th century BC and became the dominant language of the Roman Empire. Initially spoken by the inhabitants of Rome and the surrounding areas, Latin evolved from a local dialect into the lingua franca of the Western world as Roman military conquests and political influence expanded across Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. The language underwent several developmental phases, beginning with Old Latin (7th-3rd centuries BC), progressing through Classical Latin (1st century BC-1st century AD) as exemplified in the works of Cicero, Caesar, Virgil, and Ovid, and eventually transforming into Vulgar Latin, the colloquial form spoken by common people throughout the Roman territories.
As the Roman Empire declined and fragmented, Vulgar Latin evolved into the various Romance languages including Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan, making Latin the ancestor of languages spoken by over 800 million people today. Medieval Latin emerged during the Middle Ages as the language of the Catholic Church, scholarship, and administration throughout Western Europe, serving as the international language of learning and diplomacy for over a thousand years. The Renaissance period saw a revival of Classical Latin literature and a renewed interest in the language's literary and rhetorical traditions, with humanist scholars striving to restore the elegance and purity of Ciceronian prose.
Latin's influence on modern languages extends far beyond the Romance family, as it contributed thousands of words to English, particularly in scientific, medical, legal, and academic terminology. The language's highly inflected grammatical system, featuring six cases for nouns and complex verb conjugations, allowed for flexible word order and precise expression of relationships between words. Latin literature encompasses a vast range of genres from epic poetry and drama to historical works, philosophical treatises, and religious texts, producing masterpieces that continue to influence Western culture. Today, Latin remains the official language of Vatican City, is studied in schools worldwide as a foundation for understanding Western civilization and languages, and continues to be used in scientific nomenclature, legal terminology, and other contexts.
