The situation at the Orange Order-RUC trouble flashpoint in Drumcree, Co Armagh, Northern Ireland was relatively calm late tonight after a mid-evening frenzy of disturbances. Supporters of the Orange Order, a Protestant grouping marched on the town again, claiming what they say is their right to march through a minority Catholic area in defiance of a police ban.

Mid evening Monday, and Protestant supporters of the Orange Order again march on Portadown in Northern Ireland trying to find a way of breaching a police ban.

Its the third day of disturbances following the decision by the Royal Ulster Constabulary to ban a march from routing through a sensitive minority Catholic area of the town.

The crowd of protesters which peaked at around 7,000, thinned out later as a number of marching bands dispersed and supporters of the protest went home.

The Orange throng largely complied with stewards' instructions to keep the demonstration peaceful although a number of firecrackers and other missiles were thrown at the police ranks.

As the position grew calmer again, a number of RUC reinforcements called in when trouble initially flared, were withdrawn from the immediate scene.
