This scripture uses the metaphor of an anthill to symbolically explain the process of healing the body and mind. An anthill that 'fumes at night and burns by day' represents the human body caught in the smoke of mental proliferation and the fire of daily conflict. A wise practitioner must take up the 'sword of wisdom' and dig deep into its interior. The various obstacles uncovered during this excavation—such as ignorance, anger, doubt, and the five hindrances—symbolize mental defilements that must be removed one by one. Finally, a dragon appears, symbolizing the Arahant who has extinguished all defilements; the teaching reminds us to respect, not harm, this noble being. Through this metaphor, the Buddha presents the specific steps to reach complete awakening by letting go of attachment through diligence and wisdom.
