The longest night of the year - 13th or 21st of December depending on what calendar you're looking at...

Back in the days when Sweden still used the Julian calendar, the longest night of the year - the Midwinter Solstice - was the 13th of December. On that night the light would be brought back and some traditions says Lucia was the one who did it.

When the Gregorian calendar was introduced in Sweden in 1753, the date of the Midwinter Solstice became the 21st of December.

In Sweden we kept the tradition of Lucia as the light carrier on the 13th of December. Some historians also say it's based on traditions of the Goddess Freya.
