One of the two suspected Bosnian Croat war criminals seized in a violent raid by special Dutch forces belonging to SFOR pleaded not guilty to crimes against the Geneva Convention on Friday (19/12) in the International War Crimes tribunal in the Hague.
Anto Furundzija is accused of not intervening during a sexual assault against a Muslim when he was commander of the so-called "Jokers" unit during the war in Bosnia.
The Secretary-General of NATO, Javier Solana, used Furundzija's arrest as a warning to the Bosnian Serb President, Biljana Plavsic, who he met during a visit to Bosnia on Friday. He said that suspected war criminals would receive a fair trial in the Hague and should come forward. He said that the international community would not tolerate war crimes suspects remaining free.
Solana went on to Sarajevo to meet the UN special representative Carl Westendorp and the Commander of SFOR troops in Bosnia, Erik Shinseki before holding talks with the Bosnian Muslim leaders, including President Alija Izetbegovic.
