STORYLINE
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed Lieutenant General Benny Gantz as the Israeli Defence Force's Chief of Staff on Monday in Jerusalem in front his US counterpart.
Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, was visiting Israel briefly for talks apparently aimed at reassuring Israel, which is concerned about instability in Egypt and the future of a 1979 peace treaty.
"An earthquake is under way in the Arab world and in large parts of the Muslim world, and we do not yet know how things will end," Netanyahu said in a speech during the ceremony.
He added that Israel hoped to strengthen its existing peace agreements and sign new ones, but remained "prepared for any possibility."
On Sunday the Israeli Cabinet approved Gantz's appointment, who takes office at a time of great uncertainty in the region.
He will have to deal with an evolving crisis in neighbouring Egypt, where longtime President Hosni Mubarak was ousted.
Gantz also will have to cope with militant threats from Lebanon to the north and Gaza in the south, as well as with Iran's disputed nuclear programme.
Gantz replaces Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, who stepped down on Monday after a tenure marked by high public approval ratings, but tensions with Defence Minister Ehud Barak.
Barak had nominated Major General Yoav Galant for the job, but a real estate scandal involving Galant forced his nomination to be withdrawn.
