Darkrai (Japanese: ダークライ Darkrai) is a Dark-type Mythical Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.
While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, Darkrai can Mega Evolve into Mega Darkrai using the Darkranite. Mega Darkrai was introduced in the Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Darkrai was officially revealed in February 2007. It is a member of the lunar duo along with Cresselia, and it is the last Pokémon in the Hisui Pokédex. Darkrai plays a central role in Mega Dimension, serving as one of the key figures in its storyline.
Darkrai is a black, shadow-like Pokémon. It has a small head with a white fog-like ghostly plume billowing from its head covering one of its bright blue eyes, with the portion on its face resembling hair. It also has a red spiky growth around its neck. It has skinny arms and long black tatters hanging from its shoulders. It also has black, claw-like hands. It has the slight appearance of an hourglass figure and appears to be wearing an old, ripped cloak. Darkrai generally stays afloat in the air and does not have any sort of legs, but it is able to extend stilt-like appendages in their place and stand on the ground. In self-defense, Darkrai can retract its head and white "plume" into the pit atop its torso fringed by the aforementioned red growth.
Darkrai is known for its association with nightmares. It is capable of afflicting people and Pokémon with horrific nightmares to drive them away from itself. It can even unleash unending nightmares, which can only be cured by Darkrai's counterpart: the Legendary Pokémon, Cresselia or one of its Lunar Feathers. However, in reality, its nightmare powers are actually an instinctive defense mechanism instead of a conscious malicious act. It can fly at high speeds. It can also become a shadow in order to hide and remain isolated. It can inflict drowsiness through total darkness. Darkrai resides on Newmoon Island, being only active during nights of the new moon. Darkrai can communicate with others through dreams.
The relationship between Darkrai and its counterpart, Cresselia, can vary between different individuals and canons. Some are antagonistic, as seen in Sleepless In Pre-Battle! and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, or cooperative, as seen in Nightfall? Nightmares! and A Midsummer Night's Light!. As seen in Sleepless In Pre-Battle!, Darkrai can be attracted to nightmares. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Darkrai can use an ability called "Dark Power" to either trap people and Pokémon in a "Dark Void" dimension of total darkness or teleport them to another location.
Absorbing tons of Mega Power, Darkrai's ability to afflict nightmares can be enhanced, losing control of it in the process. This creates a mélange of subconcious thoughts, including memories, from people and Pokémon, as demonstrated with Hyperspace. Such effects however, can cause pain to Darkrai and even force it to undergo Rogue Mega Evolution. As mentioned in the Sleep Style Dex, Darkrai has attempted to use Dark Void while it is asleep. It is theorized that Darkrai performs this move because it cannot contain its overflowing power. Darkrai can be lured through a combination of Event Drowsy Power and Cresselia. The Eureka Seed can bring out the full power of Darkrai. Darkrai has been observed slumbering during the day of New Moon.
Darkrai is the only known Pokémon capable of learning and using the move Dark Void. It is also the only known Pokémon that can have Bad Dreams as an Ability.
Darkrai can Mega Evolve into Mega Darkrai.
When Mega-Evolved, Darkrai's entire body doubles in length and becomes almost five times heavier. Its upper body grows larger and more spherical, while its arms transform into long tentacles that gyrate. Six similar, wispy, swirling tatters protrude from it: five extend from the back, and one appears on the chest. From the longer, tattered skirt, two long, swirling legs emerge. Darkrai's ghostly plume lengthens, becoming pointier, with two locks on each side. The left eye is obscured by this "hair", revealing the right eye, which has an eerie hot pink hue. The previously red growth around its neck has turned black and now features eight new triangular shapes—three small triangles on two parallel sides and one large triangle on the opposite sides. In between these shapes, eight thin, white, vein-like lines appear. Darkrai can now open and close the neck growth when it retracts its head. When exposed, the growth appears dark gray and glows in shades from magenta to dark red as the head is retracted. Mega Darkrai hovers horizontally with its h
