Using a 1.4x Teleconverter with the Sony 200-600mm for Wildlife Photography: Is it worth it?

For a long time I have been wondering if using a teleconverter is doing more harm then good. We wildlife photographers use them a lot. We accept the loss of light. But would be also accept the loss of quality? A possible loss of sharpness?
I have been wondering about this for quite some time. Finally I will put it to the test: does using a teleconverter mean that the quality will be degraded? And if so, by how much? Would we be better off NOT using a teleconverter? The Sony 1.4x teleconverter is widely accepted for usage with the Sony 200-600mm lens. But what is it doing to the sharpness of the photo?
