A car bomb has exploded in Beirut, Lebanon, wounding at least 38 people the day before the Islamic holy month of Ramadan begins.

Ambulances and fire engines sped through the streets to rescue casualties in Bir al-Abed area as the extent of the devastation unfolded.

Dozens of cars were still ablaze in the parking lot where the car rigged with explosives was left.

The explosion ripped through the Beirut stronghold of Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group that has been fighting alongside President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's civil war. Report by Sarah Kerr.
