Cancelling a cruise is never a great option, but how do you cancel a cruise and what should you expect to be offered when you do cancel a cruise?

One of the most important things to consider is getting a good travel insurance policy and actually read the fine print. Yes it's boring, but it'll save you a lot of stress and money. When we had to cancel it turned out the policy didn't cover for cancellations due to the ill health or loss of a family member, and the cruise line were largely unhelpful. We were only offered an alternative (and only if we paid a lot of extra money) after a lot of arguing and a complaint.

The terms of your booking will explain a lot about what happens when you cancel - every cruise line has its own policy. Some will allow you to transfer your booking at no cost, others will expect you to pay a fee, and some won't help at all. Check the FAQs section on your cruise line's website for details, but the most important thing is to contact your cruise line or travel agent ASAP. The earlier you cancel, the better offer and the more options you'll get.
