India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire after a phone call between their Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs). In India, the position is held by a senior Army officer with the rank of Lieutenant General. The current Indian DGMO is Lt Gen. Rajiv Ghai; his Pakistani counterpart is Maj Gen. Kashif Abdullah. The DGMO oversees military operations, including combat strategy, counter-terrorism efforts, and operational readiness. During crises, the DGMO serves as the first point of contact with counterparts in adversarial nations. A key duty is maintaining direct communication via a dedicated hotline to manage border tensions. The DGMO regularly briefs the Army Chief and Ministry of Defence with updates on military operations. Coordination with other military branches and ministries ensures smooth execution of operations during peacetime and conflict. DGMO’s real-time decisions are vital in handling ceasefire violations, troop movements, and crisis management.
