On Friday, November 9, 2018, we celebrated Veterans Day with a special guest speaker: Colonel Charles E. McGee, U.S. Air Force (retired) – one of the original Tuskegee Airmen. Born in 1919, Colonel McGee joined the first unit of U.S. African-American fighter pilots in 1942. He is not only a brave airman with a 30-year decorated service record, he also achieved one of the highest numbers of combat missions by any Air Force fighter pilot: 409 over three wars (World War II, Korea and Vietnam). He lived a fascinating life during a tumultuous time in history and continues a life of incredible service to this day.

Colonel McGee was introduced by General Lloyd “Fig” Newton, U.S. Air Force (retired). General Newton joined the Air Force in 1966, flew 269 combat missions during Vietnam, and joined the Thunderbirds in 1974. Following more than 30 years of combat and staff experience, Fig was tapped to serve as Commander of the USAF Air Education and Training Command, before retiring as a four-star general.

We were also honored to have Keva Toron Womble, granddaughter of Walter Crenshaw, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. Walter Crenshaw served as an Administrative Assistant to the Provost Marshall at Tuskegee Army Air Field and oversaw the induction and background checks on the initial 500+ recruits.

The honor and selflessness demonstrated by these heroes exemplifies who we want to be as an organization, as employees, as family members, as community members and as Americans. We thank them for their service and sacrifice.
