Census schedule
Phase 1 (House listing and housing census): Starts April 2026.
Phase 2 (Population enumeration): Starts February 2027.
Reference Date: March 1, 2027, for most of the country.
For snow-bound areas: October 1, 2026, for the Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Key features of the census
First digital census: It will use mobile apps for data collection, a Census Monitoring & Management Portal, and allow for online self-enumeration.
Caste enumeration: The census will include a nationwide enumeration of castes for the first time since 1931.
Early data availability: The digital format is expected to make the data available much faster compared to previous censuses.
Standardized data collection: A code directory will be used with mobile apps to streamline data processing and reduce errors from manual entry.
