The Wild West, at least seen from the back of a horse, has long been a world of men with a gun in their pocket. Having already screened two great art house pleasers at Berlinale Forum, the brothers David and Nathan Zellner chart the new frontiers of this year’s Competition programme with Damsel, starring Mia Wasikowska and Robert Pattinson. At Berlinale Talents (of which David is an alumnus), the Zellners take the stage to detail how they turned genre norms upside down to make what is being called a "feminist Western." Revisiting the preparations for the roles and the shooting process, they tackle the intricacies of gender stereotypes, as well as how to wash away the dustiest attitudes of the old days with a good laugh and a stiff drink in the saloon.
