11/22/19 UPDATE: Formic Pro formic acid does NOT kill Varroa mites but Oxalic acid does! Check my latest videos! Nobody said beekeeping was easy and it isn't! Work hard and success is sure to follow! There is no reason to have (inbred)Russian Honey Bees especially from Foley's Russian Bees. Those queens are the worst I've ever had and the colonies were NOT mite resistant! I've been WARNING beekeeper's not to buy from Foley's Russian bees. I've lost over $1,000 trying Foley's queens, I have very few of his queens left. My home bred queens have out performed the Russian queens I had! Jason Foley does not know how to safely ship queens. I had a 26 queen order die because of his ignorance. Mites are killing the Russian bees just the same as my other bees. I've been doing the same powdered sugar treatments to all my bees. Last fall it was a weekly thing and it seemed to slow down the dying. Had someone from You Tube tell me that his bees are not true Russian. I contacted the President of the Russian Honey bee Breeders Association and was told that Jason Foley is working on becoming a member. Jason Foley's website; Foley's Russian bees.com mentions that he is working on becoming a member of the RHBA. You don't become a member without RHBA bees. The President of the RHBA would not say anymore about Jason Foley. I feel Foley's bees are from the RHBA and they will not criticize him because he is a customer. I ended up researching the history of the Russian honey bee, as Foley's website claims they are nothing more than descendants of European bees. I've had the same Italian honeybees now for nearly 6 years and currently have 2016 queens from grafting. My recommendation from my research is to keep what you have and try to improve them year after year just the same as evolution. If you buy new bees every year you are essentially starting over. Russian honey bees are not any better than the others! I tried them and wished I hadn't! JUST SAY NO TO RUSSIAN HONEYBEES! I did mention the wrong date for Varroa destructor as a subspecies it was named 2000-2001. UPDATE; 2/13/18 This winter I've lost 33% of Foley's queens! My home grown queens have not had a loss yet! The queens that cost me nothing live longer than the queens that I bought from Foley's! UPDATE 4/29/19; After checking Foley's Russian Bees website, I read that his bees have very little trouble from Varroa mites. It finally dawned on me, of course not! Jason Foley told me that he provides all beekeepers in his area with queens to guarantee that his mated queens are pure Russian. He does not have various commercial beekeepers bringing in colonies of honey bees into his area. Therefore his honey bees are not exposed to Varroa mites! I have a couple commercial beekeepers that introduce colonies into my area, Michigan Bee Works and Purple Hives. They both take their colonies to California for the almond pollination where the bees pick up Varroa mites from other bees. Every summer my bees pick up those Varroa mites from those commercial bees! I really question any of the claims about Russian honey bees made by the Russian Honey bee Breeders Association! Louisiana is not exactly the same climate as the climate in Russia where Varroa mites come from. I think the climate difference makes a big difference in the actual results, it's already known that mites don't do well with heat! Were those Russian Bees ever subjected to large numbers of Varroa mites? Are any Russian Honey bees taken to California for the almond pollination where they would be subjected to large numbers of Varroa mites? I should have done my research before getting involved with Russian honey bees. All I want now is for them to be a bad memory, and of course they are! UPDATE (8-6-19) WATCH MY LATEST VIDEOS! I do have sufficient proof that Russian Honey Bees are no good mostly due to inbreeding! The colonies that I have bred here in Michigan with the commercial beekeepers are by far more superior to any Russian Honey Bee! Also search " Book Scorpion ".
