Mukhtar Mai's life took a tragic turn in 2002 when she was gang-raped by four men from a powerful local tribe, allegedly as a form of punishment for a crime supposedly committed by her younger brother. She instead of succumbing to the pressures of silence and shame, decided to put up a legal fight against the heinous crime committed against her and challenged the deeply entrenched patriarchal norms of society.

Her extraordinary story has made her a powerful symbol of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. She has received numerous national and international accolades for her bravery, including being named Glamour Magazine's Woman of the Year in 2005. Her advocacy and efforts continue to inspire individuals and organizations globally, contributing to the ongoing fight for gender equality and justice.
