In another sign of improving relations between North and South Korea, workers began rebuilding a railway line across the world's most heavily armed border on Monday to connect the two Korean capitals for the first time in more than 50 years.

South Korea's president, Kim Dae-jung, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony in Imjingak, a village just south of the Demilitarized Zone, which has separated the two Koreas since the 1945 division of the peninsula and the 1950-53 Korean War.

00 02 Fireworks signal the historic moment that building work started on the first rail link between North and South Korea since the end of the Korean War in 1953.

00 14 The South Korean President Kim Dae Jung presided over the ceremony, applauding as a steam locomotive rolled its way along more than 20 metres of railway track laid specially for the ceremony.

00 26 Steering the locomotive was seventy three year old, Han Joon-ki.

He drove the last train that ran on the cross-border line in late 1950, transporting military equipment for U-S troops fighting for South Korea.

00 39 Despite his age, Han Joon-ki says he'd like to be selected to drive the first train of the completed railway.

00 48 The new link, with a four lane highway running beside it, will ultimately link the two capitals: Seoul in South Korea, and Pyongyang in the North.

00 57 The two Koreas still have to negotiate how the railway and highway will be used, but Seoul officials expect them to be limited initially to cargo shipments.

The President's speech gave people like her hope, when he said this was the start reconciliation in the divided fatherland.
