This stage of the therapeutic relationship often has mixed feelings depending on the situation; this could include happy, sad, proud, relief, anger, frustration, desperation, and more.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when terminating with your client.

Termination should not be a surprise - this should have been discussed during the assessment.

Review goals or requirements of the program so the client is clear on why they are terminating.

Consider if you can use the word “graduate” out of the program instead of “terminate”; it is using strengths based instead of being a negative.

Acknowledge and discuss feelings for the client and next steps - what is the plan when they face challenges again?

Discuss a safety plan for suicide prevention if appropriate.
