A bond hearing has been scheduled for former Florida ballerina Ashley Benefield, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of her estranged husband.

Benefield is currently being held at the Manatee County Jail and will appear before Manatee County Circuit Court Judge Matt Whyte for the hearing. Her defense team has filed a motion requesting her release on bond while she appeals her conviction.

In July, a six-person jury found the 33-year-old guilty of manslaughter with a firearm, a lesser charge than the original second-degree murder charge stemming from the 2020 shooting of Doug Benefield at her home in Lakewood Ranch. Earlier in December, Judge Whyte sentenced her to 20 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation.

Throughout the case, Ashley Benefield has maintained that she acted in self-defense, claiming she feared for her life after enduring a tumultuous and abusive four-year marriage.

According to the bond motion filed by her defense attorney, William Ponall, the law allows for a person to be released on bond while their conviction is under appellate review, subject to the discretion of the trial or appellate court.
