The Goya Painting That Mocked The Devil

Описание к видео The Goya Painting That Mocked The Devil

Witchcraft was quite a controversial topic in the 18th and 19th centuries in Spain. During that time, witchcraft was considered a belief held by uneducated people. In Spanish popular culture, there was a belief that witches gathered at night to perform acts of black magic and devil worship, which were called: sabbaths.

Goya painted "Witches' Sabbath" (1797) as a critique (and a mockery) of these superstitions. Commissioned by a very influential family of the time, Goya created six paintings dealing with witchcraft. In this video, we will analyze one of them, which has become the most recognized due to a strange creature that is the protagonist of this painting.
