Ukraine has taken a significant step in strengthening its defense capabilities with the commencement of local assembly for the CZ BREN 2 rifles. This marks a milestone in Ukraine's partnership with Israel Weapon Industries (IWI), the Czech firearm manufacturer, and represents a broader effort to modernize Ukraine's arsenal to NATO standards amid ongoing conflict.
The CZ BREN 2, a 5.56x45mm gas-operated, select-fire rifle, has gained recognition for its reliability and versatility on the battlefield. First introduced in 2011 as the CZ 805 BREN, the updated BREN 2 has become a favorite among Ukrainian troops. Various configurations, including models with 8-inch, 11-inch, and 14-inch barrels, have been visually confirmed in service, catering to the needs of Ukraine’s special forces and regular army alike. Additionally, there have been sightings of variants chambered in 7.62x39mm and 7.62x51mm, adding to the weapon's adaptability in diverse combat scenarios.
The groundwork for this collaboration was laid during the Ukrainian International Defence Industries Forum in September 2023. At the event, Deputy Minister of Defense Daniel Blažkovec described the transfer of production for the BREN 2 "Sich" rifle as a flagship project. The rifle's name, "Sich," carries historical significance, referencing the fortified Cossack camps that symbolize resilience and independence.
Formalizing this partnership, an agreement was signed on July 16, 2024, between Ukraine’s state-owned defense corporation, Ukroboronprom, and Israel Weapon Industries (IWI). By November 2024, the first Ukrainian assembly lines for the BREN 2 rifles were operational. This collaboration goes beyond assembly—it paves the way for full-scale local production in the future.
Oleh Hulyak, General Director of Ukroboronprom, emphasized the strategic importance of the project:
"This partnership with our Czech colleagues enhances our Defense Forces’ access to reliable and modern small arms, produced locally. It also represents another step toward integrating Ukraine’s defense industry with NATO’s industrial ecosystem."
